As we celebrate MDI’s 60th anniversary, we are proud to highlight the inspiring stories of individuals who have found opportunity and success through our mission. This year’s theme, “Access to Good Jobs for All: Increasing Access & Unlocking Opportunity,” resonates deeply with the experiences of our employees. Meet Caleb Wooley, a shining example of how MDI’s commitment to inclusive employment creates meaningful change.
Caleb Woolley, who lives in Grand Rapids and works at MDI’s Grand Rapids facility, is a testament to the transformative power of opportunity. For the past two years, Caleb has been an integral part of our production team, contributing to the creation of corrugated plastic products that serve various industries, including the USPS. His journey at MDI began as a contractor, but his dedication and hard work quickly led to a direct hire role.
Before joining MDI, Caleb was encouraged to apply by his father, who had worked here as a maintenance worker. Caleb was drawn to MDI’s supportive environment, where individuals with disabilities thrive and grow. He saw it as a place where he could fit in, contribute meaningfully, and develop his skills.
Outside of work, Caleb enjoys spending quality time with his wife and son. He is passionate about sports, hiking, and fishing—activities that bring him joy and balance. His connection to MDI goes beyond just employment; it’s about being part of a community. Caleb values the camaraderie with his colleagues, the opportunity to learn new things, and the supportive nature of the environment. He particularly appreciates working with his Supervisor, Shane Janousek, and Todd Wirkkala, who have provided him with hands-on training and support.
Initially, Caleb faced challenges with speaking to others and dealing with anxiety. However, MDI’s inclusive and encouraging atmosphere allowed him to overcome these hurdles and grow both personally and professionally. As he reflects on his journey, Caleb feels a profound sense of pride when he sees USPS totes he helped produce around town. It’s a visible reminder of his contribution and success.
Currently, Caleb’s hard work and dedication have put him in line for a promotion, highlighting his progress and the value he brings to the team. When asked about working at MDI, Caleb enthusiastically shares that it is a wonderful place to grow and develop. His story is a powerful reminder of how MDI’s commitment to providing access to meaningful employment can unlock opportunities and create lasting impacts.
As we celebrate our 60th anniversary, we honor Caleb and all our employees whose stories reflect the essence of our mission. MDI’s journey of empowering individuals and creating inclusive job opportunities continues to make a difference, one success story at a time.
