As we mark MDI’s 60th anniversary, we are proud to highlight individuals who embody our commitment to expanding opportunities and unlocking potential. One such individual is Nicholas Wilkie, a dedicated professional who has been a cornerstone of both the Metropolitan Center for Independent Living (MCIL) in St. Paul and MDI’s Board of Directors.
Nicholas has served as an Independent Living Coordinator at MCIL for 18 years, where he plays a crucial role in helping individuals with disabilities remove barriers and explore new possibilities. His work involves one-on-one meetings, needs assessments, and connecting people with resources such as funding options and community contacts. Nick’s resourcefulness and dedication shine through as he encourages people with disabilities to explore opportunities, apply for funding, and connect with essential services.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Nicholas was deeply involved with High School Transition programs, a role he cherished for its direct impact on students’ futures. Recently, he facilitated a tour for an individual with disabilities, introducing them to potential job opportunities at MDI. This act of mentorship reflects Nick’s ongoing commitment to bridging gaps and fostering connections.
Born with cerebral palsy, Nicholas’s journey is a testament to perseverance and advocacy. His parents’ encouragement led him to a community event at MDI, where he met Rachel Wobschall and was inspired to join MDI’s Board of Directors. As the youngest board member at the time, Nick’s fresh perspective and enthusiasm have been invaluable.
Nicholas’s role at MDI extends beyond the boardroom. He has also contributed as a Unified Work Trainer, teaching career skills to participants through in-person sessions. His passion for seeing people succeed and his belief that everyone has untapped potential are central to his work. Nick finds joy in witnessing individuals achieve more than they thought possible and thrives on encouraging others to shine.
Outside of work, Nicholas enjoys riding motorcycles, spending time with his wife and dog, and exploring his community. He is an avid foodie, loves his adapted pedal bike, and relishes fall, his favorite season. His commitment to inclusivity and accommodation in the workplace is a testament to his belief in the power of support and understanding.
Nick’s journey with MDI and MCIL is a shining example of how dedication to unlocking opportunities can transform lives. As we celebrate our 60th anniversary, we honor Nicholas and all those who work tirelessly to make a difference, embodying our theme: “Access to Good Jobs for All: Increasing Access & Unlocking Opportunity.”
Thank you, Nicholas, and all our supporters, for being integral to MDI’s success and for helping us build a brighter, more inclusive future for everyone.
