Governor Mark Dayton has proclaimed September 10 – September 16 Direct Support Professional (DSP) Recognition Week in Minnesota.
The week is an annual national celebration of the tremendous contributions DSPs make to the people they care for and their broader communities. Governor Dayton has issued the official proclamation in consecutive years. This years’ proclamation highlights the essential role DSPs play in supporting people with disabilities in their pursuit of their best lives.
“Direct support professionals help individuals with disabilities live meaningful, productive lives and make it possible for them to live successfully in their communities and avoid costly institutional care,” states the proclamation.
Organizations across Minnesota are holding appreciation events and celebrations to honor and thank the staff that provide a wide array of service and care to people, from daily hygiene to daily health care. Due to an increasing demographic shortage of care givers, these talented and dedicated professionals are in increasingly short supply, making the need to recognize their work and advocate for fair and competitive wages all the more important.
